The Kaiser invented the attacking libero role — a sweeper who carried the ball forward into midfield and beyond — and in doing so changed how the game was conceptualised across Europe for decades. Beckenbauer’s subsequent World Cup victory as West Germany manager in 1990 made him one of only four people in history to win the competition as both player and manager. His combination of technical elegance and competitive authority made him the defining German player of the twentieth century.
