As Germany manager, he produced a different achievement: a World Cup in 1990 that required tactical organisation, experience and the ability to get the best from a squad that had individual quality but needed a system to make it work. Beckenbauer passed away in January 2024 at the age of 78. His statue stands outside Bayern Munich's Allianz Arena and his name is attached to the very identity of German football.
