Gullit's Chelsea chapter was brief — his sacking in February 1998 came before the project he had built could fully mature — but his contribution to the trajectory of the club was significant. He gave them a culture and a quality of foreign player that set the standard for the transformation that would later accelerate under Roman Abramovich. His personal playing contribution, even at 34, demonstrated the quality that had made him one of Europe's finest players a decade earlier.
