Maldini's technical quality — his reading of the game, his positioning and his ability to defend without fouling — made him the definitive defensive player of his generation. His appearance in the 2005 Champions League final, when he scored in the first minute against Liverpool before the remarkable Istanbul comeback, and the 2007 final, which Milan won, bookended two European Cup experiences that few players have matched. His number 3 shirt at the San Siro is retired in his honour.
