Argentina lifted the trophy, and Maradona's status as a footballing immortal was secured. He returned to the World Cup final again in 1990, this time losing to West Germany, but remained the heartbeat of Argentine football for the rest of his career. Maradona's genius was built on close control, low centre of gravity, and an ability to change direction and pace that defenders simply could not live with. He played with flair and defiance in equal measure, on and off the pitch, and that combination is exactly why his name still carries the weight it does decades later. Few players in the history of the sport are spoken about with the same reverence.
