He retired in 2017 after a spell with New York City FC. Pirlo also represented Italy 116 times. His finest hour came at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, where Italy won the tournament. At Euro 2012, he delivered a performance for the ages before Italy were beaten by Spain in the final. He is a World Cup winner, a Champions League champion and one of the defining players of his era.
