Ronald Koeman is one of the most iconic defenders of his generation. Known for his incredible passing range, leadership, free-kicks and goalscoring ability from defence, Koeman played for Groningen, Ajax, PSV, Barcelona and Feyenoord. His career included huge success in the Netherlands and Spain, most famously becoming part of Johan Cruyff’s legendary Barcelona “Dream Team”. At Barcelona, Koeman scored the winning goal in the 1992 European Cup final against Sampdoria, securing the club’s first European Cup and writing his name into football history. Before Barcelona, Koeman enjoyed major success with PSV, including the remarkable 1987–88 season when the club won the Eredivisie, KNVB Cup and European Cup. He also played for Ajax, winning domestic honours, and later finished his playing career with Feyenoord. Few footballers have such a strong connection to the biggest clubs in Dutch football, and Koeman remains one of the rare figures to have represented Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord during his career. For the Netherlands, Koeman won 78 caps and scored 14 goals. He was a key member of the Dutch side that won Euro 1988, the Netherlands’ first major international trophy. He also represented his country at the 1990 World Cup and 1994 World Cup, as well as Euro 1992. His mix of defensive strength, technical quality and set-piece brilliance made him a favourite for generations of Dutch football fans. After retiring as a player, Koeman moved into management, taking charge of clubs including Vitesse, Ajax, Benfica, PSV, Valencia, AZ, Feyenoord, Southampton, Everton and Barcelona. He also returned to lead the Netherlands national team, continuing his long association with Dutch football at the highest level.
