Now retired from playing, he remains involved in football as a coach. For Ghana, Essien became a national hero. He earned 59 caps and scored 9 goals for the Black Stars, representing his country with pride and passion. He played at the 2006 World Cup, where Ghana reached the knockout stages in their first ever World Cup appearance, and was also part of Ghana’s 2014 World Cup squad. His international career also included Africa Cup of Nations appearances and major moments in Ghana’s rise as one of Africa’s strongest football nations.
