Blue Rock may just be the hardest vineyard to reach in northern California; up a dirt track, through an unmarked gate, and over a hill. But once you arrive, the view makes the journey worthwhile.. Founded by Italian settlers in the 1880s, the vineyard exudes the charm of Tuscany or Piemonte. It's in the air, the trees they planted, and even the rosemary that grows wild around the vines. A true hidden gem in the northern reaches of Alexander Valley.. Kenny Kahn entered the wine industry, discovered the vineyard, and fell in love. He has preserved its Italianate character while introducing a modern approach, planting a blend of French grape varieties. These have merged beautifully with the Californian terroir, creating wines that age gracefully yet shine in their youth.. A few years ago, Kenny expanded south of the main vineyard after acquiring a stunning parcel in the Petaluma Gap, where cool coastal winds funnel through a channel in the hills. Here, he planted Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, embracing the mix of warm sunshine and cooling Pacific breezes that bring bright acidity and complex flavours. Made in a light, fresh style, these wines are sublimely drinkable, the perfect companions for a summers day.. The 2020 Blue Rock Pinot Noir bursts from the glass with enchanting aromas of ripe cherry, crushed raspberry, and a whisper of violet, underscored by earthy notes of forest floor and cedar. On the palate, vibrant red fruits, pomegranate, cranberry, and wild strawberry, are elegantly intertwined with soft tannins and a hint of spice. The oak influence is delicate, adding refined depth and carrying through to a long, silky finish with a smooth, lingering aftertaste.. We purchased this wine about a year ago and chose to give it time to settle. Now elegant, graceful, and beautifully expressive, it's a superb bottle for the table, especially for alfresco dining. And who doesn't love a great Pinot Noir?
