Fontaines D.C. will release their fifth studio album, Dopamine Chamber, on 16 October via XL Recordings. Produced by James Ford, this project succeeds their 2024 UK platinum album, Romance. The new record marks a major shift away from the band’s original guitar-driven style, embracing a colder, more synthetic sound. The announcement coincides with the release of the lead single, "Marianne", and its Dave Meyers-directed music video. The album blends potent balladry with anthemic melodies set against a dark, atmospheric backdrop. It explores the pursuit of pleasure during societal decline, focusing on themes like artificial intelligence, climate collapse, and political violence. Frontman Grian Chatten describes the album as an experimental space designed to test different mood-altering tracks on the listener. Chatten notes that while Romance balanced human emotion with digital corruption, Dopamine Chamber leans heavily into a colder, automated feel to deliver an honest, warning-filled reflection of modern anxieties. He traveled through Venice, Vienna, and Sicily to write the lyrics, intentionally omitting optimism to provide a raw commentary on the world. Bassist Conor Deegan explains that past albums focused on physical places like Dublin, whereas this record explores internal escapes like hedonism, digital screens, and fantasy. Musically, the album incorporates synthesisers, marching drums, samples, and 1960s Italian pop strings, with several tracks completely omitting guitars. Guitarist Conor Curley aimed to look toward future sounds rather than past influences. The band recorded with James Ford across London, rural England, and Palermo, where Chatten tracked vocals inside a makeshift mattress booth.
