2018 Clos Pons Alges
Alges is Clos Pons` signature red, made from organically farmed Tempranillo and Garnacha vines planted at altitude in Costers del Segre. The name means `algae` in Catalan, a nod to the ancient marine sediments in the vineyard soils. The 2018 vintage has had time to develop, showing more complexity and integration than younger releases. Extended aging in French oak before release. Red cherry, raspberry and plum with dried herbs, leather and earthy minerality. Medium bodied with silky tannins softened by age. The fruit has evolved beyond primary freshness into something more savoury and nuanced. There`s Mediterranean warmth balanced by altitude-driven freshness and acidity. Long finish with hints of tobacco and spice. Serve at room temperature (16-18°C). No decanting necessary at this age. Excellent with grilled vegetables, roast pork, mushroom risotto, or Manchego. At its peak now, will hold another 3-5 years for those who enjoy further development.
