Ch. Puech-Haut, Saint-Drezery Prestige Rouge, Languedoc-Roussillon, 2016 | Perfect Bottle (1x75cl)
THE PRODUCER Château Puech-Haut rises from the heart of the Languedoc-Roussillon, on a historic limestone plateau north of Montpellier where vines have been cultivated since antiquity. The estate takes its name from the Occitan word puech, meaning hill, a direct reference to its elevated terroir that overlooks the surrounding garrigue and Mediterranean plain. This mosaic landscape of limestone scree, clay, and rolled pebbles is shaped by persistent winds and intense southern light, creating ideal conditions for producing wines of freshness, structure, and aromatic precision. The vineyards are interwoven with native scrubland—thyme, juniper, wild fennel, and rosemary—preserving biodiversity and anchoring the vines in a distinctly southern sense of place. Long used for mixed agriculture, the land bears traces of its past in ancient paths, stone shelters, and natural water sources that punctuate the terrain. Today, Château Puech-Haut marries this deeply rooted history with contemporary ambition, crafting expressive wines that reflect both the rugged authenticity and modern dynamism of the Languedoc. THE WINE This flagship red wine comes from one of the Languedoc’s most respected estates, known for elevating the region through meticulous vineyard work and a deep respect for terroir. Sourced from low-yielding vines rooted in limestone and clay soils around Saint-Drézéry, Château Puech-Haut’s Prestige Rouge reflects the balance between Mediterranean warmth and the freshness brought by altitude and cooling winds. The estate’s vineyards are surrounded by native garrigue, reinforcing biodiversity and contributing to the wine’s aromatic complexity. In the glass, the wine reveals layered notes of ripe black cherry, blackberry, and plum, complemented by hints of spice, cocoa, and wild herbs, with a structured palate and refined, persistent finish. Rather than simply highlight the best score to promote a wine, our average critic score is calculated from the scores provided by several respected wine critics, who we follow for specific regions. They do not represent all critic scores and, wherever possible, we try and give more weight to more recent reviews. Where appropriate we consider market-based scores like Global Wine Score or Wine Searcher Average scores. As a rule, we look to offer wines that achieve a92/100average critic score or better and frankly a lot of very good wines simply don’t make the cut. As a high-end provider we want to reflect that positioning in the quality of wines we offer. Such wines are only a tiny fraction of those generally on offer in the market. We believe that an average score is a more conservative and representative approach, but it is still subjective and only offered as a guide to our customers, who will (and should) do their own research. We will add individual critic scores to our website in the future.
