K. F. Groebe 2022 Morstein Riesling Grand Cru dry | The Wine Barn (1x75cl)
"Fritz Groebe tells me that they originally had Silvaner and then Scheurebe planted in this vineyard and then had to rip the vines out and replant because of esca, so they replanted with Riesling. This wine is made from three-year-old vines! They’ve had the vineyard for 250 years but this is their first Morstein GG Riesling. Made with a bit of unintentional bâtonnage when they had to move the wine, otherwise it spent a lot of time of full lees. Absolutely cracking! Packed with orange fruit and passion fruit and bright, bright, bright acidity. The energy of the wine circles out, radiant, ripe and rippling kumquat, quince, craquelure. It's just so body-and-soul buzzingly good that it's dangerously easy to overlook how complex and powerful this wine is. At this super-young stage, its radiance is almost blinding. But it will quieten and take on a more intensely restrained, disciplined, sculpted glow in the years to come. You can't go wrong."Tasted by Tamlyn Currin, wine writer for Jancis Robinson18/20Wine: A dry Riesling with fruity citrus aromas aromas, fine minerality and an elegance on the palate. Vineyard: The Morstein vineyard is classified as VDP Grosse Lage. VPD. GROSSE LAGE (Grand Cru) is the highest classification of quality for German vineyards. The imposing and majestic slopes of Morstein rise up the valley from the river Rhine, extending to western Gundersheim, and up to a high plateau at 280 metres above sea level. The vineyards here have heavy clay marl soil. The subsoil is dominated by water-bearing limestone rock layers, which ensure an optimal nutrient and mineral supply to the vines, even during prolonged dry periods. The difficult to root, stony limestone substrate, combined with the late ripening of the grapes during the extended growing season, characterise this wine. Alcohol: 12,0% vol. Res. sugar: 5,5 g/l Acidity: 8,4g/l
