Ah, Special Occasion by The Word, what can I say about this album? The only word that comes to mind is...confusing. From start to finish, it's a rollercoaster of emotions, genres, and soundscapes that leave you questioning what exactly is happening. The opening track, 'Rainbow Rhythms', sets the tone with its psychedelic vibes and off-kilter rhythms. It's a bold choice for an opener, but it definitely grabs your attention. However, as the album progresses, it veers off into unexpected directions, like a drunk driver on a roundabout. Tracks like 'Lemonade Love' and 'Sunshine Serenade' are upbeat and catchy, but then you have songs like 'Moonlight Melancholy' and 'Midnight Mirage' that make you question if you accidentally switched to a different album. But, despite the album's chaotic nature, there are moments of brilliance scattered throughout. The haunting vocals on 'Dusk Dream' and the hypnotic beats on 'Twilight Tango' show a glimpse of the band's potential. Overall, Special Occasion is like attending a fancy dinner party where the host keeps changing the menu every ten minutes. You never know what you're going to get, but you'll definitely leave feeling slightly disoriented. It's a wild ride, that's for sure.
