Za većinu držanih ukrasnih ptica je ptičji pjesak neophodan za zdrav probavni sustav. Ptičji želudac se sastoji od 2 dijela: žljezdani želudac gdje se automatski cjelovita zrna enzimski predigestiraju. Drugi dio je mišićni želudac u kojem se prethodno digestirana zrna uz pomoć unesenog želučanog šljunka melju u fine, probavljive sastojke. Ovi kamenčići koji su sadržani u pijesku, zamjenjuju kod ptica sa dva dijela želuca zube. Ako je ptičji pjesak izostavljen, to može izazvati ozbiljne probavne poremećaje u ptica. Zašto je pjesak bitan kod ptica? Želučani šljunak (Grit) su mali, šiljasti kamenčići, koji su potrebni za drobljenje sjemenki u želucu ptice (mišićni želudac) i tako omogućavaju odgovarajuću probavu. Budući da se šljunak izlučuje u normalnoj probavi, pticama treba stalno nuditi želučani šljunak. Vapna školjki su važan isporučilac kalcijuma i potiču jake kosti i čvrstoću ljuske jajeta.
