It's not often that an album comes along that can leave you scratching your head in both confusion and admiration at the same time, but BUBBLEMATH's Turf Ascension manages to do just that. This Minneapolis-based band has been brewing up a storm in the prog-rock scene for years, and their latest offering is no exception. From the moment the opening track, "Avoid That Eye Candy," kicks in, you know you're in for a wild ride. The over-the-top instrumentation, complex time signatures, and highly technical musicianship may not be everyone's cup of tea, but for those willing to dive in headfirst, it's a thrill like no other. The standout track has to be "Be Together," a whirlwind of frenetic energy and absurdly catchy melodies that somehow manages to blend pop sensibilities with prog-rock complexity. The sprawling 10-minute epic, "A Void That I Can Depart to," pushes the boundaries of what prog-rock can be, at times veering into self-indulgence territory.
