Dream Theater
Dream Theater, huh? More like Yawn Theater, am I right? These prog rock veterans are back with their self-titled album that's about as thrilling as watching paint dry. From the very first track, you can tell that Dream Theater are just going through the motions. The overindulgent guitar solos, the overwrought lyrics, the seemingly endless drum fills it's all been done before, and done better. The band tries to inject some energy into the album with tracks like "The Enemy Inside" and "Enigma Machine," but it all just falls flat. It's like they're trying to recapture the glory days of their earlier work, but they've forgotten what made those albums so great in the first place. Sure, there are moments of technical brilliance scattered throughout the album, and fans of the band will undoubtedly find something to love here. But for the casual listener, Dream Theater's latest effort is just another forgettable entry in their discography. Overall, Dream Theater feels like a band that's stuck in the past, desperately clinging onto the glory days of prog rock. It's time for them to step out of their comfort zone and try something new. In the meantime, I'll be catching some Z's while listening to this snoozefest of an album.
